August 6th marks the 54th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. But, It’s been six years since the disastrous U.S. Supreme Court decision in Shelby County v. Holder, which gutted the Voting Rights Act and paved a path for states to pass the wave of new restrictive voting laws. Since the Shelby decision, we’ve seen restrictive voting laws passed in 20 states. Voter ID laws, gerrymandering, and voter purges are putting up barriers to voting for all people, but especially young people and communities of color.
Protecting the right to vote for every citizen is critical to a functioning Democracy, which is why passing the Voting Rights Advancement Act (HR4) is a major priority.
Join us on August 6th, the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, by hosting or attending a VRA Vigil in your community to shine a light for voting rights and to call Congress to pass the VRAA.
We’ll provide a host guide and lots of support to pull off an impactful event in your community. I hope you can join us!
