The OAP Open Mic, which began in April of 2011, features expert guests on highlighted topics, along with an ‘open mic’ portion when audience members can share music, poetry, announcements, jokes, rants, and other items of community interest. Open Mics regularly include action items such as writing postcards and making phone calls.

Past guests and topics have included elected Wisconsin legislators such Rep. Mark Pocan, State Senators Janis Ringhand, Mark Miller, and Kathleen Vinehout to discuss such issues as the state budget, education, transportation, etc.; Dr. Robert Kraig from Wisconsin Citizen Action on Affordable Care Act; Dick Smith of Citizen Climate Lobby on how to lobby Congress regarding climate change; Heidi Rose from Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort on Gun Violence in Wisconsin; Oregon School District representatives on Bully Prevention, Mary Flynn from Lutheran Social Services on supporting immigrants; Drs. Dan Bennett and Eric Moffit from Physicians for a National Healthcare Program on single payer healthcare; Lisa Graves from the Center for Media and Democracy, John Nichols of the Nation Magazine and Matt Rothschild of the Progressive Magazine.

During state and national elections in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016, OAP has run the southern Dane County staging location for the Coordinated Campaign and turned out higher than average Democratic vote totals in our region. In addition, OAP regularly hosts voter registration drives and voter education forums. In 2011 and 2013, OAP organized day-long conferences on the American Legislative Exchange Council and the effects of Citizens United with national experts, including Rep. Jan Schakowsky, John Nichols of the Nation Magazine, Lisa Graves from the Center for Media and Democracy, Rep. Mark Pocan of Wisconsin’s 2nd Congressional District and the late Bob Edgar from Common Cause.
